We have 4 runs this summer!!! Whoop Whoop!!! Willmar Fest with ReYou June 20th, Stingers Invitational June 21st, Rock’in Robins July 16th and Kandiyohi County Fair August 10th. I am so excited to do this for the kids in our community. Kids 12 and under can participate. It’s been a crazy last few weeks trying to secure these races, but all could see the benefit to having a fun run added to their community event. In the process of getting sponsors, I have a grant application submitted and keeping my figures crossed there. Would like to have a finishers arch for the kids to run under. Medals for those that participate in all races, excluding the Stingers invitational.
For the Stingers race we are inviting 50 kids 3rd to 5th grade and their families to a Stingers game and M4M Fun Run. Each child will get a new pair of Nike running shoes, thanks to the partnership with TC Running Company. A meet and greet the mascots and players, a run around the ball field, a picnic and then enjoy a baseball game. This is for the kids that could really use an opportunity like this. Child guides are helping us find those kids that could greatly benefit from this experience. I want to give a big thank you to Marc and Ryan with the Stingers and Nicolas Marcus for sponsoring this event!
My intention for these races was to have them all part of a community event. So that the families of the children running and the kids of course would be able to take part in these festivals and community events. Making for more inclusion of our community. The Willmar community is very diverse in ethnic backgrounds, from Latino, Somali and Karen to Caucasian. Many do not take part in the local community events and festivals. This is a way of inviting kids and their families to take part in what we enjoy so much here in our community. Building bridges and strengthening our community.
I can’t wait to see how things come together! This is the first steps to getting a mentor program here in the Willmar area. We so need a solid mentoring program for our young girls and boys. It should be priority that kids mental and physical health become our main concern, as they are our future. With so many one parent families now, it’s difficult to raise a child and give them all the experiences many take for granted. Kids need our help and it’s up to us, as responsible adults, to give them every chance in life. Because sometimes the parents just can’t and some just won’t. Make a difference and think about mentoring. It can change your life and the life of a young child!
I want to say thank you to all of you that have made this happen. Fair board, Rock’in Robins, Amber and her team at ReYou, and Marc and Ryan with the Willmar Stingers. You all ROCK!
